Project Hypotheses

Mike Reddy

Transport of mercury and organics

The hypothesis that my project is examining in the Yukon study concerns the linkage between mercury transport and organic matter transport in river systems. As you may know, currently in many areas of the world only a small fraction of mercury deposited from the atmosphere to the terrestrial landscape runs off in streamflow. My project will examine factors that determine processes transporting mercury in the Yukon and its tributaries. We will test the hypothesis that there is a strong correlation between dissolved and particulate mercury and the respective dissolved and particulate organic carbon fractions. We will also test the hypothesis that the bulk of the mercury transported in the Yukon and its tributaries is exported during high flow events in association with organic matter.
