Photograph of Gulkana Glacier on August 31, 1967, one day before the end of the net
balance year. The snowline is at a position typical for the end of the melt season. The
equilibrium line altitude (ELA) was about 1,740 meters in 1967, just slightly below the
long-term average of about 1,760 meters. Folds visible in the medial moraines near the
terminus suggest Gulkana Glacier may have surged in the past (Meier
and others, 1971). Trim lines (top of lateral moraines) from the major last glacier
advance, which culminated between 1875-1900 A.D. (Péwé
and Reger, 1983), can be seen on either side of the lower glacier and extending down
valley and out of view. Photograph by Austin Post, USGS, #67L3-85. (Click on image
